Independent auto repair shops and small chains are a much better Acumatica fit than dealerships, precisely because the workflow is lighter: no floorplan financing, no F&I deal desking, no factory warranty claims. What a repair shop actually needs — job/work order against a vehicle, parts consumed from inventory, labor time billed, invoice to the customer — maps onto Field Service plus Inventory reasonably directly, with the same honesty required about where it stops being a direct fit.
Field Service appointments as repair orders
The Field Service module's Appointment and Service Order objects cover the shape of a repair order well: customer and vehicle (modeled as Equipment records — Field Service's Equipment entity, normally used for serviced assets like HVAC units, works for vehicles with VIN, make/model/year as attributes), scheduled technician time, and a bill of parts and labor that flows to invoicing. This is a legitimate use of Field Service outside its typical field-technician-visiting-a-customer-site use case, and I have deployed it this way for a shop chain — the module does not care whether the "site" is the customer's home or your own bay.

Parts consumption from a shop-floor bin, not a warehouse
Parts used on a repair order issue from inventory the same way any Field Service or Sales Order line does — the practical setup decision is treating the shop's parts room as its own warehouse/location so consumption is tracked against the actual repair order and gross margin per RO is visible (parts cost plus labor versus what was billed). Shops that skip this and just expense parts to a general COGS account lose per-job profitability entirely, which is usually the first report an owner asks for once the system is live.
Repair shops using industry flat-rate labor time guides (Mitchell, ALLDATA, or similar — "this job is billed at 2.3 hours regardless of actual time") have no native Acumatica equivalent; that is external labor-guide software, integrated at best via a manual reference or a custom lookup table you maintain yourself. Acumatica bills whatever labor time is entered on the service order — it does not know industry standard times for a brake job on a given model.
Why this works where the dealership case does not
The dealership problem is fundamentally about deal-desking and DMV/title workflows that have no Acumatica analog at all. A repair shop's core loop — schedule, consume parts, bill labor, invoice — is exactly what Field Service plus Inventory already do for HVAC, equipment service, and similar businesses; automotive is just the vertical, not a different workflow shape. That is why I recommend Acumatica directly for repair shop clients where I steer dealership clients toward "keep your DMS, integrate the GL."
Wrapping up
Auto repair is a legitimately good Field Service + Inventory deployment, not a compromise. The two things to plan for deliberately are treating the parts room as its own trackable location (for real per-RO margin) and accepting that flat-rate labor guide integration, if the client wants it, is external — Acumatica does not ship industry labor-time standards.
